On 12 October, the Ocean Sustainability Club (OSC) at the Bangladesh Marine Academy, Chattogram had the distinct honor of welcoming Tafsir Matin Johansson, Associate Professor at the World Maritime University (WMU), whose expertise spans research, ocean sustainability, governance, and maritime management. His visit marked a memorable and inspiring moment for both the Academy and OSC members.
Earlier in the day, Dr. Johansson delivered a thought-provoking lecture titled “Law of the Sea and Maritime Technology,” offering cadets valuable global perspectives on the rapidly evolving maritime sector. His discussion highlighted the importance of international legal frameworks and emerging technologies in shaping responsible maritime practices, encouraging cadets to reflect on their professional responsibilities toward protecting the marine environment.
During his visit to the Ocean Sustainability Club, Dr. Johansson interacted closely with club members and learned about OSC’s ongoing initiatives in ocean sustainability, youth engagement, and environmental stewardship. He expressed strong appreciation for the innovative student-led awareness programs and sustainability activities, recognizing them as meaningful grassroots contributions toward strengthening global ocean governance.
The session also highlighted the leadership of Mohammad Feroz Mostafa, President of the Ocean Sustainability Club and a proud WMU alumnus, whose vision continues to strengthen the connection between global maritime academia and youth-driven sustainability initiatives at the Academy. Under his guidance, OSC actively promotes research-based dialogue, hands-on environmental projects, and inclusive participation aligned with international maritime sustainability goals.
Dr. Johansson’s encouragement served as a strong source of motivation for OSC members, reaffirming that local initiatives can contribute to global sustainability efforts. The visit concluded on an inspiring note, energizing the next generation of seafarers to remain committed to safeguarding the oceans and advancing responsible maritime leadership for the future
