Youth Leadership in Action: OSC’s Voice at an International Maritime Conference

The Ocean Sustainability Club (OSC) proudly celebrates a landmark achievement as its President represented Bangladesh and Bangladesh Marine Academy at the World Maritime University (WMU) during the international conference titled “Advancing the Blue Economy Through Gender Equality.” This prestigious global platform brought together maritime leaders, policymakers, academics, and practitioners from around the world to discuss pathways toward a more inclusive and sustainable maritime future.

On 22 May, the OSC representative participated in an expert panel session on the Blue Economy, highlighting the club’s ongoing efforts to empower the next generation of seafarers through education, youth engagement, and community-driven sustainability initiatives. The presentation showcased how student-led activities—particularly OSC Talks, awareness campaigns, sustainability programs, and gender-focused dialogue sessions—are creating meaningful grassroots impact within Bangladesh Marine Academy and beyond.

A central focus of the conference was the persistent challenge of gender inequality in the maritime sector. Discussions addressed critical issues shaping the industry in 2025, including barriers to women’s participation in seafaring careers, workplace safety and dignity, long-term career sustainability, and the need for stronger inclusive policies. While these challenges remain significant, it was encouraging to witness strong commitments from global institutions such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO), WMU, and other international stakeholders to accelerate progress through research, education, and policy reform.

OSC’s initiatives closely align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water). Through structured dialogue, leadership opportunities for female cadets, and youth-centered sustainability projects, the club continues to promote inclusive maritime education and responsible ocean stewardship.

This international recognition reflects not only the dedication and vision of the Ocean Sustainability Club but also the progressive leadership environment fostered at Bangladesh Marine Academy in developing socially responsible maritime professionals. Representing Bangladesh on such a distinguished global platform is both an honor and a powerful reminder that local initiatives can inspire global conversations.

The Ocean Sustainability Club remains committed to breaking barriers, strengthening inclusion, and advancing sustainability across the maritime community. This milestone marks another inspiring step forward in OSC’s journey—demonstrating that the voices of young changemakers from Bangladesh are being heard on the world stage.
