From Earth Day Awareness to “One Cadet, Two Trees”: Bangladesh Marine Academy Advances Its Green Campus Initiative

From a Symbolic Beginning

On 30 April 2026, as part of activities marking Earth Day 2026, members of the Ocean Sustainability Club initiated an environmental awareness programme at Bangladesh Marine Academy, including a symbolic tree plantation on the Academy campus.

Although modest in scale, the initiative carried a broader objective: to encourage cadets to recognise environmental stewardship as an integral part of their development as future maritime professionals.

The programme formed part of the Club’s ongoing Green Campus Campaign, through which it seeks to promote tree plantation, responsible waste management, reduction of plastic pollution, ocean literacy and environmental consciousness among cadets.

Following the initial programme, Bangladesh Marine Academy continued to support and advance the concept, transforming the symbolic beginning into a broader campus initiative.

Second Phase: “One Cadet, Two Trees”

On 20 August 2026, the Commandant of Bangladesh Marine Academy formally launched the second phase of the programme under the theme “One Cadet, Two Trees.”

Cadets from both senior and junior batches participated in the plantation activities, including core members of the Bangladesh Ocean Sustainability Club.

The initiative contributes to the Academy’s environmental objectives while complementing broader national priorities relating to tree plantation, environmental protection, climate resilience and sustainable development.

The participation of cadets is particularly significant because the programme combines environmental awareness with practical responsibility. Rather than viewing sustainability solely as an academic concept, cadets are encouraged to participate directly in improving and protecting the environment in which they live and train.

Building Environmentally Responsible Seafarers

For a maritime training institution, environmental education carries particular significance.

Today’s marine cadets will eventually serve aboard ships operating across the world’s oceans. During their professional careers, they will encounter increasingly stringent international requirements concerning pollution prevention, waste management, emissions reduction, marine environmental protection and sustainable shipping.

Developing environmental consciousness during cadet training can therefore contribute to creating maritime professionals who understand that protection of the marine environment begins not only at sea, but also through responsible behaviour on land.

The “One Cadet, Two Trees” initiative represents one practical expression of that philosophy.

Towards a Green and Plastic-Conscious Campus

Tree plantation is one component of the Ocean Sustainability Club’s wider environmental vision.

Since its inception, the Club has been promoting the concept of a Green Campus at Bangladesh Marine Academy. Its longer-term aspirations include developing and strengthening systematic waste collection and segregation, responsible waste management, reduction of unnecessary single-use plastics, prevention of plastic pollution, environmental awareness and greater understanding of the relationship between land-based activities and ocean health.

The ultimate objective is to contribute towards a campus where environmental responsibility becomes part of everyday institutional culture.

A properly developed waste management system, accompanied by awareness and behavioural change, can help reduce the amount of plastic and other waste entering the surrounding environment and, ultimately, the marine ecosystem.

Cadet Initiative and Institutional Support

The progression of the programme from a symbolic Earth Day activity to a wider Academy-supported initiative demonstrates the value of cooperation between cadet-led environmental engagement and institutional leadership.

The Ocean Sustainability Club expresses its sincere appreciation to the Commandant and the Bangladesh Marine Academy authority for their positive support, encouragement and continued commitment to environmental initiatives on campus.

For the Club members, the expansion of the programme is an encouraging indication that the objectives behind the Green Campus Campaign are gradually being translated into visible action.

The Club intends to continue working with the Academy community to promote environmental awareness among the new generation of seafarers and to support initiatives relating to campus greening, responsible waste management, plastic pollution reduction, ocean literacy and sustainable maritime practices.

Growing Trees, Growing Responsibility

The trees planted under the programme will take years to mature. During those same years, today’s cadets will progress from the Academy to ships and eventually into positions of professional responsibility and leadership.

In that sense, the programme carries a symbolic message beyond tree plantation itself: as the trees grow, so should the environmental responsibility of the future seafarers who planted them.

From the symbolic Earth Day plantation of April to the broader “One Cadet, Two Trees” programme launched in August, Bangladesh Marine Academy’s Green Campus journey demonstrates how small environmental initiatives can gradually develop through awareness, participation and institutional support.
