Celebrating Women’s Empowerment in Maritime at OSC Club Day 2025

Celebrating Women’s Empowerment in Maritime at OSC Club Day 2025

In a powerful fusion of purpose and passion, the Ocean Sustainability Club (OSC) at Bangladesh Marine Academy proudly hosted a special edition of OSC Talk on Club Day, April 19th, 2025, to spotlight the critical theme of women’s empowerment in maritime. This event was held in honor of International Women’s Day (March 8) and in anticipation of the IMO’s International Day for Women in Maritime (May 18)—two global milestones celebrating the achievements and contributions of women at sea and ashore.

Voices That Inspire >>

The event featured two dynamic female speakers whose personal journeys in the maritime sector lit up the stage with authenticity, hope, and determination.

Ms. Shanjida Karim Momo, Assistant Manager – Ocean Freight at DB Schenker Logistics, and one of Bangladesh’s pioneering female seafarers, shared her trailblazing career path. From navigating the high seas to transitioning into a senior role in shore-based logistics, her story was a testament to resilience, adaptability, and lifelong learning. Her experience not only highlighted the evolving landscape for women in maritime but also served as a blueprint for cadets envisioning sustainable careers in the industry.

Ms. Nafisa Anjum Faria, a recent graduate from her cadetship with German shipowner Oldendorff, reflected on the challenges and triumphs of life onboard. Her candid reflections provided invaluable insights into shipboard realities, cultural dynamics, and the importance of perseverance for female cadets entering a traditionally male-dominated space.

Adding depth to the dialogue, a male club member shared his reflections on gender equity and inclusive growth, emphasizing that real progress in maritime requires allyship from all. His message resonated deeply with the audience, reinforcing that gender balance is not a women’s issue—it’s a leadership and industry issue.

Engaging Conversations, Practical Takeaways

The event culminated in an interactive open forum where cadets engaged in meaningful discussions with the speakers. Questions ranged from sea-time placement to post-cadet career planning, workplace dynamics, and personal motivation. The dialogue was not only thought-provoking but also deeply practical—giving young cadets real-world advice on navigating their own journeys.

Impact Beyond the Event

This OSC Club Day wasn’t just a celebration—it was a movement in motion. It demonstrated that when young professionals come together to share stories, challenge norms, and uplift each other, real change begins. The presence and support of the Academy authority played a crucial role in creating a safe, inclusive space for such conversations to thrive.

The Road Ahead

The session left us with one powerful takeaway:

” With determination, preparation, and the right support systems, women will continue to redefine the future of the maritime industry. ”

As we move forward, the Ocean Sustainability Club remains committed to promoting diversity, equity, and empowerment across the maritime sector. Together, we can build a future where opportunity knows no gender—and the ocean belongs to everyone.
